Since our National Speedway Museum opened it has evolved into a place of homage for all fans of our two wheeled sport. Ever-changing exhibits give the Museum a fresh look every time you visit and now, with the new extension which was opened by our WSRA President, Eric Boocock in April, furnished with new displays, we have a Speedway Museum to be proud of.

From Cycle Speedway through pre-war Dirt Track, post-war Japs, Jawas and Ice Racing bikes right up to the modern laydown Gms, our Museum has them all.

If you were a “Skid Kid” and rode Cycle Speedway before riding motorcycle Speedway, there is a large board with the name of every rider who went from Pedal Power to 500cc engine power, so check if your name is there as it is surprising just how many kids made that giant step into motorcycle Speedway.

The “Pit Scene” in the new extension shows a rider bent over his Jaws and working frantically. Somehow I don’t think that he will beat the two minute time allowance as the clutch, carburettor and twistgrip are all missing from his bike!

The new Peter Craven display features the “Wizard of Balance” sliding his JAP on real shale with a row of his many trophies lit up in a cabinet below his wheels. As you will know, it is Peter’s image which features on all the WSRA and Speedway Museum material from Badges to car decals and on our letterheads too. A fitting tribute to a great rider who was taken from us too soon.

Meanwhile, our fame is spreading with a double page article about the Museum appearing in an edition of Backtrack magazine. It was a spoof story giving imaginary donations which may have been given to the Museum by various Speedway personalities, from Alf Weedon donating a dusty old camera plus 20 volumes of Speedway Mail, to referee, Frank Ebden donating his well worn stop watch which operates at twice the speed of a normal watch. Anyone who rode when Frank was referee will understand that one as when you were returning to the pits after a hard race, you almost collided with the riders coming out for the next race fearing being put on the two minute warning.
