Born in Australia on the 11th November 1911 in Dandenong, Victoria.

Bill started his riding career in the UK riding for New Cross Tamers from 1937 till the out break of WWII in 1939. He returned to the speedway track after the ceasing of hostilities at Odsal, Bradford Boomerangs in 1946 but was back at New Cross by 1947 remaining there until they closed in 1953.

Then returning to Bradford (Tudors) 1953 for a very brief period before coming back south and joining Wimbledon (Dons) again for just a year before moving on to Rayleigh Rockets in 1955 and again in the same year this time the Wembly (Lions) where he competed in one meeting before retiring.

Bill Longley qualiffied once for the World Speedway Final in 1949 and he finnished in 9th place.

Bill was a member of the World Speedway Riders’ Association (formerly Veteran Speedway Riders’ Association) and died at the age of 93 on the 29th April 2005
