Brian Meredith who was born in Coventry in 1939 on August the 3rd began his two wheel racing on a cycle with, I understand, a cycle speedway team called The Earlsdon Devils who tried very hard to get permission to build their own track on Hearsall Common, they failed and eventually three of them moved onto ride for the Alvis Aces one of the three being Brian. Not sure if it was whilst he was riding cycle speedway or later that Brian began work as a member of the track staff at Coventry speedway Brandon.
At the same time he started training at Brafield joining the side in 1954, Brayfield were in the Southern Area League at the time. The following season he became one of the top scoring riders in the Southern Area League and at the same time the leading junior rider at Brandon where he was captain of the Bees reserve team, however despite his success in the junior team there seemed to be very few chances for him in the senior team. In 1956 he had five rides for the Southern Rovers (SAL) but only two for Coventry Bees (NL2), 1957 and his riding could have been enjoyed at Rayleigh II (SAL) I assume on loan and at Coventry he rode two meetings (NL) before this season was ended for him by a nasty crash whilst riding in the Midland Riders’ Championship at Coventry.
He returned to the track in 1958 seemingly with his courage and enthusiasm undiminished but his opportunity for rides in the Coventy team were still hard to come by and although he stayed for a further two years he only rode four more matches for them at the same time riding once at Aldershot and twice at Rye House.
Not surprisingly 1960 saw him move to Swindon where he remained for four years doing well in the first two with regular rides but he seemed doomed to become injured in the second two and retired in 1963.
Following his retirement he became interested in restoring and riding vintage speedway machines and this continued for many years.
