Martin Ashby elder brother to David Ashby, born Marlborough, Wiltshire on February 5th 1944 and still living in the area.

He started his Speedway career in 1961 with the Swindon Robins and continued to ride for them until 1968 when the control board decided to move him to Exeter Falcons, the thoughts of the Swindon promotion, fans or indeed Martin, on this move are not recorded.

Martin continued to ride for the Falcons until 1970 returning to Swindon Falcons for 9 further years leaving Swindon at the end of the 1979 season, it is said by some, as the result of some ill feeling and others because of ill health following an accident sustained at Sheffield. Joining Reading Racers in 1980, apparently in good health because he had a very successful year, the Reading Racers becoming the British League Champions this year which proved to be Martin’s final year before retirement.

He frequently rode for England in international competition and qualified for the World Final Championship in 1968 and with his team won the World Team Cup in 1968 & 1975 and was part of the team that won the British League Championship in 1967 and 1980

He is now retired and a respected member of the World Speedway Rider’s Association.
