Meadowbank Stadium became the home of the Edinburgh Monarchs in 1948 only a year after the Leith Athletic FC began to play their matches at the same venue.

These two Edinburgh programme covers were produced eleven years apart and although the cover price is the same the style is very different.

Left 1952 season and a National League Division Two meeting with Liverpool that took place in April. Edinburgh finished this season in the middle of a league that had eleven members.

And on the right an Edinburgh Select in a Challenge Match against Belle Vue that took place in 1963.

It is sad to recall that this is the match in which Peter Craven, behaving in the sporting manner that came as second nature to him, lay down his bike to avoid hitting another rider and was hit himself, receiving injuries from which he later died.

It is now 50 years since this awful event and I think it true to say his memory and that of his skills lives on with all who love this sport.
