Letter from the
Speedway Control Board
to Ron Butcher

Dear Mr Butcher,

I was present at the meeting at West Ham on the 28th April and witnessed your action in the race when I. Holmes was laying on the track in your path.

I feel I should write to you and offer you my congratulations on a very gallant attempt to avoid this fallen ride when, at some risk to yourself, you did not hesitate to throw your machine down on to the track. The fact that you could not altogether avoid the fallen rider was no fault of yours and just in case you feel that you might have done better, I feel I should write and let you know how I feel about it. I do not think you could possible have done any more than you did and on behalf of the Control Board I wish to congratulate you on your action which was in the best traditions of our Sport.

Yours sincerely,

Signed by Major Fearnley
