Sheffield Speedway 1960

On the left a somewhat dishevelled looking programme cover but it dates from a time when the Sheffield team and venue were at the start of a successful period having just gone back into League racing after a number of years either closed or hosting a few open meetings.

Frank Varey, had been a promoter at Sheffield, leaving before it ground to a halt. He returned 1952 and tried to re-establish speedway at Owlerton but failed. He decided to try again to bring back regular meetings in 1960, the year of this cover, this time with success.

Mr Frank Varey was able to establishing regular league racing at the venue that continued for eighteen years until until the end of the 1988 season.

Following the local tragedy at Hillsborough the Owlerton stadium was closed to all sports the following year and was not to host speedway again until 1991, when after a difficult start they managed to become an established team at an established venue where league racing continues to the present day 2013.
