Tom Owen, born in Omskirk, Lancashire, on the 19th of June 1951 elder brother of Joe and Ritchie all three were speedway riders Tom and Joe were riding together at Newcastle during a glittering period for the Newcastle Diamonds but I can find out very little about the younger brother Ritchie who, I am lead to believe, rode for Ellesmere Port Gunners.

Tom, it seems, started his career in 1972 at Barrow, Holker Street, when meetings started at the track and stayed with them until the closure of the track in 1974 season moving on to ride at Hull and Newport in the same year.

1975 and Tom rode for Hull for just 3 meetings, for Newport Wasps 24 meetings but managed to clock up 47 appearances for Newcastle Diamonds. (Brother Joe also rode for Hull and Newcastle during this year)

Hull Vikings and Newcastle Diamonds was the place to see Tom ride for a number of years starting in 1975 he continued to be seen riding at both teams until 1980 when I believe racing at Hull was discontinued. At this point perhaps it should be said that Hull seemed to be embroiled in less than satisfactory arrangements regarding it team members arrangements and it is possible that although it went on for a number of years that Tom Owen was riding there as either a guest or on loan, I just do not know but the number of meeting he rode for Hull Vikings were not very many in each of the years although they happened in every year.

In 1981 Tom Owen rode only once for Newcastle and there does not seem to be a record of his riding at any other track during that season so one has to conclude that he was either ill or had a severe injury.

Back on the Diamonds track in 1982 he rode only for them during this year which was to be his last with them for a while.

1983 and Tom joined the Stoke Potters riding there for the next three years with only one short trip to Wolverhampton Wolves for just two meetings. On leaving Stoke after the 1986 season he returned to Newcastle Diamonds in 1987 for what was to prove to be his last racing season, retiring I am led to believe following a very damaging accident that led to debilitating leg injury.
