Tony Lewis, born the 6th June, 1923 don’t know if he rode for any other team but the Poole Pirates although there seems to be a suggestion that he may have ridden at Sheffield in 1960.

When you ask people what they know of Tony they all ways say he was tall so I guess that he must have been noticeable taller than most people something that is unusual in speedway and from the fact that he is said to have ridden Grass Track in the Poole area that he is probably form that part of the UK.

Expecting you, the reader to fill in the detail for me.

Now in 1949 Tony began his speedway career with Poole Pirates with the help and encouragement of the Poole rider Frank Holcombe he soon became a very skilled rider and well known for holding the white line.

An established member of the team the following year saw him teamed with Ken Middleditch and according to those who saw this partnership it is said to be one of the top partnerships seen in speedway this partnership continued through to 1955, nicknamed “Me and My Shadow” by the supporters they proved the backbone of the Poole team helping them win the league title three times.

In 1955 the Pirates toured Sweden with Tony part of the team, he was involved in a track accident and sustained a fractured skull that halted his career for several years and very nearly caused him to lose his life. In 1960 he returned to the track much to the pleasure of the Poole supporters particularly when Tony found he was able to pick up where he left off, back on form and again helping Poole to League success in 1961 & 1962

Loyal to his club and team mates, always giving of his best even after he retired in 1968, in 1973 the Team Manager Ron Hart retired and Tony Lewis stepped in and was the Poole Pirates Team Manager from 1973 to 1979.

Tony Lewis was an honoured member of the World Speedway Riders’ Association but sadly died in 1997 on the 6th October.

I am sure it is obvious I need help with Tony’s details and if you can help please contact me
