Mike Vernam was born in Winchester on the 5th June 1944 and from the records I can find he started his speedway career at Weymouth on loan from Poole, although his averages suggest that he may well have had speedway or grass track experience before he joined the Weymouth Eagles in 1968 perhaps second half action at Poole.

During the 1968 season Mike returned to the Poole Pirates team remaining there until 1971 although he was released to ride for the Reading Racers during this period possibly on loan. During 1969 Mike was chosen to ride with the Young England Team in a series with Czechoslovakia and appointed Captain of the Reading Racers in 1970

1971 and he has moved to Romford Bombers for the season then onto Canterbury Crusaders during 1972, Eastbourne Eagles and Hull Vikings in 1973.

During the whole of his riding career he was contracted to Poole and still considers them  to be his team, attending, supporting and sponsoring ever since his retirement.

Retiring at the end of 1974 Mike Vernam started his Car Accessory business in the Bournmouth area returning to speedway briefly in 2004 only this time as team manager for the Weymouth Wildcats in the Conference League.

Mike is an honoured member of the World Speedway Riders’ Association and still lives in the Dorset region.
