Wigan a programme cover from 1952

The programme on the right is from the first year of Speedway Meetings  held at this venue. The promoter Peggy Waxman was granted an open licence for the year and the first meeting took place on the 2 May - open meetings continued during that season until the Control Board rescinded the licence, I do not have any knowledge of why this happened, but it meant  all Open Speedway stopped, the last meeting held on the 1 August. Would be nice to know if this was a cover from the first or perhaps the last meeting but I don’t know the exact date.

Some training took place after this date and discussions were undertaken to open a school but discussions floundered over money and those interested in opening the school moved else where.
